"Paws" to Read Everyday!
Our students have begun a new venture in reading this year! Our theme is “Paws” to Read Everyday! Lost Creek’s reading incentive program has taken a turn down a different path than before. As a school community, we are going to read and learn about different kinds of literature throughout the year. We want to focus less on prizes and rewards and more on the joy of reading.
Each month, we will study a different kind of literature (as listed below). We will have monthly assemblies planned by the students and teachers. The display case near the office will feature that month’s genre. Also, students will engage in activities/lessons appropriate for their grade levels. Our goal is for students to recognize and understand the vocabulary and structure of various forms of writing.
September Realistic Fiction
October Science Fiction and Mystery
November Nonfiction/Informative
December Poetry
January Folktale (fables, legends, myths, tall tales, fairytales)
February Biography and Autobiography
March Fantasy
April Historical Fiction
May Summary of the year
*Definitions of the genres are on the back of this note.
Please support this year’s reading incentive program at home. Encourage your child to read various kinds of books and ask him/her about the stories. Your classroom teacher will be happy to give you ideas for use at home.
