CPS Foundation

Mission Statement
The mission of the Columbus Public Schools Foundation is to enhance student learning by working with the school district, businesses and community to provide financial support for innovative programs not covered by the school district's funding sources.

The CPS Foundation is a nonprofit tax exempt corporation established in 1985. Since the foundation has 501 (c) 3 status, the organization can accept gifts from alumni and others that are tax deductible from Federal and State Income Tax, Estate Tax, and Gift Tax.

The Foundation is not a governmental body that receives tax funds but exists on contributions from people. The Foundation's vision is to provide students of Columbus Public Schools with as many educational opportunities as possible. The Foundation fills gaps created in the regular school district budget from funding shortfalls or regulatory constraints.

The Foundation is governed by a Board that consists of community individuals. Therefore, the Foundation receives funds independently of the school district and independently determines how those funds are distributed.

Foundation Projects include:

  • Nantkes Performing Arts Center - Ryland "Rip" Nantkes Class of 1940 donated money to make improvements to the Columbus High School auditorium.
  • Scholarships for Columbus High School students
  • Middle School Technology Center - obtained community input and support for the project.
  • Donation of books to CPS school libraries
  • Walt Behlen Science for Kids Fund - This gift targets elementary science and helps purchase science equipment for the district's elementary schools.
  • Brought NASA astronaut Mike Mullane to town to speak to students from all city and county schools.
  • Columbus High School Library Media Center - raised funds to furnish the library.

Along with the many worthwhile projects, the Foundation also strives to maintain an ongoing endowment fund. Their dedication will provide a lasting legacy for generations of students.
